Babar Azam defamation case

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 captain, Babar Azam, has initiated a Rs. 1 billion defamation lawsuit against journalist Mubasher Lucman. Lucman had made serious match-fixing allegations against Azam, suggesting on social media that the cricketer and his teammates were involved in deliberate underperformance.

Lucman claimed Azam received lavish gifts, including an Audi E-Tron and luxury apartments in Australia and Dubai, as bribes. He accused Azam of underperforming, particularly pointing to a loss against T20 World Cup debutants, the USA.

Azam, through his legal team, has demanded a public apology from Lucman and threatened further legal action if the apology is not issued.

Assistant coach Azhar Mahmood also responded strongly on social media platform X, expressing distress over the harassment his family has faced due to these unfounded allegations.

This defamation case highlights the increased scrutiny and criticism faced by the Pakistani cricket team and its management following their disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. The team’s early exit from the tournament has sparked numerous unverified claims against players and coaches.
