Former NBA All-Star Marc Gasol officially announces retirement from basketball


On Wednesday, former NBA center Marc Gasol officially declared his retirement from professional basketball. Gasol, aged 39, enjoyed a remarkable 11-season career with the Memphis Grizzlies, emerging as one of the franchise’s most distinguished players. Notably, he earned All-Star honors three times in 2012, 2015, and 2017, and secured the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award in the 2012-13 season.

Gasol played a pivotal role in anchoring Memphis’s defense during the renowned “Grit-and-Grind” era, contributing to the team’s first playoff victories, a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2013, and three consecutive 50-win seasons from 2012-14. His tenure with the Grizzlies, spanning from 2008 to 2019, saw Gasol achieve averages of 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. In February 2019, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors, where he clinched an NBA championship in the same season. Gasol’s final NBA stint was with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021.
