India to Remain ‘Top’ of Group A in T20 World Cup 2024 Even if They Finish Second; ICC Rules Explained

India Group A T20 World Cup 2024

India has advanced to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 after defeating the United States on June 12. However, the final standings of Group A are still pending. Regardless of Rohit Sharma’s team potentially finishing in second place, they will still be classified as the top team in the group. Here’s why.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) organized the teams into four groups of five for Round 1 based on their rankings. These seedings remain unchanged for the Super 8 stage, ensuring minimal changes to the schedule even if a team underperforms.

According to the ICC seedings, India is the top team for Group A, followed by Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and the US. Even if India finishes second, they will still be labeled A1. Conversely, if Pakistan tops the table, they will still be designated as A2.
