Omari Kellyman’s Chelsea Move Leaves Wayne Rooney Furious After Shocking Text

Chelsea’s new signing, Omari Kellyman, left Wayne Rooney fuming when he joined Aston Villa’s youth setup two years ago. The 18-year-old, who made a handful of senior appearances for Villa, has now signed a six-year deal with Chelsea, including an option for an additional 12 months.

Kellyman spent two years at Villa Park after leaving Derby County in 2022. He had spent a decade in Derby’s academy and was highly regarded by former boss Rooney before moving to Villa. Amid Derby’s financial struggles and subsequent relegation to League One, the club decided to sell Kellyman for around £725,000.

Rooney was upset about Kellyman’s transfer to Villa, learning about the deal through a text message. He said, “I lost a player this morning, a 16-year-old local lad. I got a text message this morning that a deal had been agreed with Aston Villa. That is nine players throughout January we have lost when I was assured we didn’t have to lose any, so it is tough, but we keep fighting.”

He added, “He is a local lad from Derby. He didn’t want to leave the club. He wanted to play for Derby County, so when you see young local lads getting sold, it is hard. I am not from Derby, but I know what it is like to come through an academy and have those dreams of playing for your team. It is a tough one for me and the staff to take.”

Kellyman hopes to make an impact at Chelsea, who reportedly discussed his name during negotiations with Villa over Ian Maatsen. The Blues are also interested in Villa striker Jhon Duran, but manager Unai Emery is reluctant to sell. Chelsea continues its strategy of signing young talent and is close to acquiring Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino, who has already agreed to personal terms according to Fabrizio Romano.
