Chelsea eye Enzo Maresca as new manager

LONDON: Chelsea are in discussions to appoint Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca as their new head coach, according to British media reports.

The Italian coach, who served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City until last year, successfully led Leicester back to the Premier League following their relegation the previous year.

Maresca’s football philosophy has impressed Chelsea’s hierarchy, with Sky Sports reporting on Monday that the Blues have requested Leicester’s permission to directly approach Maresca, their preferred candidate.

Chelsea are searching for a new manager after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino, who was in charge for just one season. Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, who also achieved top-flight promotion, are also linked with the role.

Pochettino’s tenure ended with Chelsea finishing sixth in the Premier League, securing a spot in the Europa Conference League but falling short of Champions League qualification and a trophy.

The Blues were narrowly defeated by Liverpool in the League Cup final and lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals by the same 1-0 scoreline after extra-time.

However, there were positive signs towards the end of Pochettino’s stint, as Chelsea achieved five consecutive wins to secure European competition for the next season.
