Elena Rybakina, the defending champion of the Italian Open, has had to pull out of the tournament due to illness, as announced by tournament organizers on Friday. The Wimbledon 2022 victor’s withdrawal came just hours before her anticipated match against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu was set to commence.
Replacing Rybakina in the lineup is French player Oceane Dodin, according to a statement released by the tournament. “We extend our well wishes to our reigning champion for a swift recovery,” the statement read.
Ranked fourth globally, Rybakina’s next scheduled appearance is in the French Open later this month.
