In a recent development, former Pakistan T20I captain Shaheen Shah Afridi expressed gratitude for his brief stint leading the national team, describing it as “an honor” to have served in that capacity. Afridi, who has now been replaced by his predecessor Babar Azam, emphasized his commitment to supporting Azam, stating that they share common goals for the team’s success.

Following a series of public deliberations by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the Pakistan Cricket Board formally announced Babar Azam’s reinstatement as T20I and ODI captain, marking the end of Afridi’s tenure. Despite potential strains within the team, both Afridi and Azam released statements of mutual support, as the PCB seeks to move past the recent upheaval.

Afridi expressed his respect for Azam and pledged to assist him both on and off the field, underscoring their shared objective of elevating Pakistan cricket. Azam, in turn, lauded Afridi’s leadership during their recent series in New Zealand and affirmed his intention to continue seeking Afridi’s counsel for important decisions.

While the decision to replace Afridi as captain may be interpreted as a lack of confidence in his leadership abilities, the PCB cited workload management as the primary reason for the change. Stressing the importance of preserving Afridi’s peak performance, especially considering his role as a key fast bowler, the board explained that rotation and rest are crucial for player longevity.

Acknowledging Afridi’s contributions, the PCB assured that he would remain a part of the team’s leadership group moving forward. They also commended Azam’s track record as captain, highlighting his achievements in guiding the team
