Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi Eyes T20 World Cup Glory Under Babar Azam’s Leadership

T20 World Cup Glory

Shaheen Afridi, the rising star of Pakistan cricket, is brimming with confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, claiming that Pakistan is on the brink of securing the coveted trophy. Under the leadership of Babar Azam, the Green Shirts are poised for a strong campaign in the upcoming tournament.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s recent performances in the T20 World Cup, Afridi highlighted the team’s near misses in the previous editions, reaching the semi-final and final in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Drawing parallels with his experience with Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Afridi emphasized the importance of perseverance and development.

“In the early seasons, Lahore Qalandars struggled, but through dedication and a robust player development program, they clinched back-to-back titles,” Afridi shared during a podcast with PCB. “Similarly, the Pakistan team is on a similar trajectory. We are on the cusp of T20 World Cup glory.”

Recalling the heartbreak of the 2022 final against England, where Afridi sustained a knee injury while taking a catch, the young bowler expressed his disappointment. “It’s disheartening to come so close and yet miss out on the World Cup title. Both instances were painful,” Afridi lamented.

Looking ahead to the upcoming tournament, Afridi stressed the importance of unity within the team. “During the World Cup, our focus is on playing as a cohesive unit. It’s not a time for discord. Everyone must adhere to the same process and work together towards a common goal,” he asserted.

Afridi also shared insights from Gary Kirsten, Pakistan’s head coach for the World Cup, highlighting Kirsten’s message to the team. “Gary urged us to play not for the name on the back of our jerseys, but for the emblem on the front of our shirts. That resonated with me,” Afridi concluded, expressing his determination to deliver for Pakistan on the global stage.
