Rangnick Commits to Austria, Dealing Blow to Bayern’s Coach Search

Ralf Rangnick stays as Austria coach, deals blow to Bayern

Ralf Rangnick has announced his decision to remain as the head coach of the Austrian national team, dealing a significant blow to Bayern Munich’s search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel.

The 65-year-old, who was widely tipped to take over at Bayern, has instead committed to leading Austria with a focus on Euro 2024. Rangnick’s tenure with Austria has seen an impressive run of form, with 11 wins in their last 14 matches under his guidance.

Despite Bayern’s interest, Rangnick expressed his dedication to Austria, stating, “I am fully committed to our common goals and the upcoming European Championship.”

Austria’s sporting director, Peter Schoettel, expressed his delight at Rangnick’s decision, noting that they gave him the time to carefully consider his options. Rangnick joins a list of high-profile coaches, including Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann, who have opted to stay in their current roles rather than join Bayern.

Tuchel, meanwhile, still has the opportunity to finish his tenure at Bayern with a Champions League title, as his Chelsea side remains in contention for the trophy. Bayern is set to face Real Madrid in the second leg of their semi-final tie next week, with the score currently level at 2-2.
