Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has revealed his predictions for the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which begins on June 1.
Ponting forecasts that Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be the top wicket-taker of the tournament. For the highest run-scorer, Ponting has chosen Australian batsman Travis Head.
Ponting lauded Bumrah’s ability to swing the ball and maintain an impressive economy rate. Bumrah took 20 wickets in 13 matches with an economy of 6.48 in the recently concluded IPL.
“I believe Jasprit Bumrah will be the leading wicket-taker. He’s been a remarkable performer and a key contributor for years. His recent IPL performance was outstanding,” Ponting said on The ICC Review.
“He swings the new ball and keeps a tight economy. His IPL economy rate was under seven runs per over. He often bowls the challenging overs, which increases his chances of taking wickets. That’s why I’m backing him.”
Ponting also praised Head for his exceptional batting across formats over the past two years. Head scored crucial centuries in the finals of both the ICC World Test Championship and the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
“My pick for the leading run-scorer is Travis Head. His performances, whether in red-ball or white-ball cricket, have been top-notch over the last couple of years. He’s playing fearless cricket,” Ponting remarked.
“While his IPL had its ups and downs, his high points were match-winning. I expect the same for Australia. He might not be the most consistent, but if he spends time at the wicket, he’ll be among the leading run-scorers and win crucial games for Australia,” Ponting concluded.
