Inter Miami’s victory in Vancouver continues to generate buzz. Two days before the match, Whitecaps fans took to social media, demanding refunds for their tickets after a 1-2 loss to ‘The Herons’.

The primary complaint is the misleading advertising by the team, which promoted the match as ‘Whitecaps vs Messi’. Additionally, fans were upset about the exorbitant ticket prices to see a team without their star players.

A new controversy has hit the MLS. Since Inter Miami announced that Messi, Suárez, and Busquets would miss the trip to Canada, fans have been vocal against both the league and the club. The absence was attributed to the long distance of the trip, 2,800 miles, the furthest an MLS team has traveled for a match.

Upon hearing the news, Whitecaps fans issued a statement on Change.org seeking financial compensation: “We, the undersigned, are deeply disappointed that Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets will not participate in the upcoming match in Vancouver. These world-renowned players’ faces have been used in promotions since the schedule announcement, leading to increased ticket demand and premium pricing.”

Fans accused the club of misleading advertising and overpricing tickets. Normally, Whitecaps tickets cost around $30, but for this match, prices ranged from $300 to $600, a cost deemed unjustified without the star players. Despite the high prices, the Whitecaps set a new attendance record with 32,465 fans at the stadium.

1. Refunds: We request that fans who purchased tickets expecting to see Messi, Suárez, and Busquets be offered a refund or substantial partial refund to reflect the actual value of the game without these players.
2. Fair Pricing: Adjust future ticket pricing to ensure it reflects the actual players who will be participating. If the presence of star players cannot be guaranteed, prices should remain similar to typical rates.
3. Transparency: Ensure clear and honest communication about player participation in future promotions to avoid misleading fans.
4. Prevent Future Occurrences: Implement policies to prevent similar situations from happening in the future, ensuring fans receive value for their money and trust is maintained.

As seen in Hong Kong during preseason, fans are demanding more than discounted products during the game. They want a “refund or substantial partial refund to reflect the actual value of the game without these players” and future ticket pricing adjustments.
