ICC Men's Player of the Month May 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced its nominees for the Men’s Player of the Month award for May 2024. The contenders hail from the West Indies, Pakistan, and Ireland. Representing the West Indies is Gudakesh Motie, Pakistan’s nominee is star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, and from Ireland, it is wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker.

Motie had an outstanding month, playing a crucial role in the West Indies’ 3-0 series sweep over South Africa. He claimed three wickets in the first T20I, thwarting South Africa’s chase of 176 as they were bowled out for 147. He repeated his stellar performance in the second T20I with figures of 3/22, leading to a 16-run victory. Motie capped off the series with two more wickets in the final match, totaling eight wickets in the series and earning a nomination for the ICC’s Player of the Month award.

Shaheen Afridi toured Ireland and England with Pakistan in May, taking 10 wickets in five matches. He achieved three consecutive three-wicket hauls—one against Ireland and two against England—ending the month with an average of 14.5.

The third nominee, Lorcan Tucker, was the standout batter. Tucker excelled in the T20I series against Pakistan, scoring 277 runs in six innings at an average of 37.83. He notched four scores above 40, including a 51 against Pakistan in Dublin. Tucker also played a pivotal role in Ireland’s historic win over Pakistan in the first T20I of the series.

For the Women’s Player of the Month, the nominees are Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu, Scotland’s Kathryn Bryce, and England’s Sophie Ecclestone. Athapaththu led the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in runs and took six wickets in four games. Bryce’s all-round performance helped Scotland qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 in September. Ecclestone impressed against Pakistan in both ODI and T20I series, claiming five wickets in three T20Is and six in two ODIs.

The ICC will announce the winners next week after fan voting concludes and results are tallied.
