‘Haris Rauf Running Thumbnail Over The Ball’: Pakistan Accused of Ball-tampering During Shock Defeat to USA

Pakistan Accused of Ball-tampering

Pakistan suffered a surprising defeat against the USA in a 2024 T20 World Cup match on Thursday in Dallas. This marked the first international encounter between the two teams, with the USA, making their World Cup debut, stunning the former champions in a thrilling Super Over.

As Pakistan prepares to face India this Sunday, controversy has arisen. Former South African cricketer Juan Theron has leveled serious accusations against the Pakistani team, alleging ball-tampering.

Theron claimed that Pakistani players were scratching the ball to induce reverse swing with a recently changed ball. He specifically accused fast bowler Haris Rauf of running his thumbnail over the ball at the top of his mark.

“@ICC are we just going to pretend Pakistan aren’t scratching the hell out of this freshly changed ball? Reversing the ball that’s just been changed 2 overs ago? You can literally see Haris Rauf running his thumbnail over the ball at the top of his mark. @usacricket,” Theron posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Theron, who played for South Africa before representing the USA, has competed in four ODIs and nine T20Is for the Proteas between 2010 and 2012. He has also played in 18 ODIs and 18 T20Is internationally, taking a total of 55 wickets. In the IPL, he represented teams like Deccan Chargers, Kings XI Punjab, and Rajasthan Royals.

In the match, USA defeated Pakistan in the Super Over by five runs, marking their second consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with the West Indies. Pakistan scored 159/7 in their 20 overs at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, while USA matched this with 159/3, leading to the Super Over.
