Shahid Afridi backs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2024 final

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has confidently predicted Pakistan’s strong performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, hosted in the United States and West Indies.

During his appearance on the PCB Podcast on Tuesday, Afridi shared his belief that the Pakistani team has the potential to reach the final of the tournament.

Pakistan, currently ranked sixth in the ICC T20I Rankings, will face the USA in their opening match on June 6. Despite recent challenges, including a T20I loss to Ireland and a 2-0 series defeat against England, Afridi remains positive about the team’s prospects.

“The conditions in the West Indies and USA will suit our players. Our spinners and fast bowlers are in great form, and our batters are performing exceptionally well,” Afridi commented. He also emphasized the crucial role of fielding, stating, “Fielding will be key for Pakistan, and they need to seize every opportunity.”

Afridi stressed the importance of unity and support within the team, especially for captain Babar Azam. “The team must back Babar, particularly the senior players, and the captain should make bold decisions. I am confident that Pakistan can reach the World Cup final,” he said.

Recently appointed as the ambassador for the T20 World Cup 2024 by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Afridi has a rich history with the tournament. He played a significant role in Pakistan’s 2009 victory and their runner-up finish in 2007.

“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup holds a special place in my heart,” Afridi remarked. “From being named Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of my best career moments are tied to this event. The T20 World Cup has grown immensely, and I am excited to be part of this edition, which promises more teams, more matches, and greater excitement.”

Afridi also shared his excitement for the upcoming India-Pakistan clash set for June 9 in New York. “The India-Pakistan match is one of the most anticipated fixtures in sport, and New York will be the perfect venue for this thrilling encounter between two great teams,” he added.
