In a historic moment for the Indian Premier League (IPL), Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli became the first player to surpass 8,000 runs in the league’s history. This milestone was achieved during the Eliminator match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Wednesday.
Kohli, 35, has been setting records this season, recently becoming the first player to score 3,000 runs at a single venue, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This achievement marks the first time a player has reached 3,000 or more runs at one venue in the IPL’s 17-season history.
Having a stellar season, Kohli is the current leading run-scorer with 741 runs in 15 innings, his second-best performance in terms of runs. He also holds the record for the most runs (973) in a single IPL season, set in 2016.
RCB’s journey to the playoffs has been remarkable, overcoming a poor start with six consecutive wins after losing seven of their first eight matches. Kohli’s outstanding form has been crucial in this turnaround. However, in the Eliminator against Rajasthan, he scored 33 off 24 balls with four boundaries before getting out.
The winner of this match will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the second Qualifier at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Notably, despite having T20 legends like Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, and Kohli, RCB has never won the IPL.
